Competing in a Changing Market: The University of New Haven’s Strategy for Differentiation

Paul Lavoie - University of New Haven
George Synodi - University of New Haven

Like many institutions, the University of New Haven has felt the impact of declining international enrollment, including the loss of over 3,500 international graduate students between Fall 2023 and an estimated Fall 2026. UNH’s leadership responded with a disciplined expense‑reduction plan to right‑size operations and, in parallel, a bold strategy to differentiate. Vice President, Corporate Partnerships and Innovation Paul Lavoie and CFO George Synodi will unpack two initiatives designed to strengthen UNH’s competitive position for the future. First, UNH secured approval to establish a branch campus in Saudi Arabia—the first international institution to achieve this milestone—advancing the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to decentralize high‑quality global education in Riyadh. They will share how UNH is navigating relationships, regulatory pathways, and accreditation planning (including NECHE) amid regional geopolitical risks. Second, UNH is launching the Pioneering Center for Innovation and Applied Technology, converting a 130,000‑square‑foot property adjacent to campus into a best‑in‑class hub where students collaborate with industry on data‑ and technology‑enabled solutions, ensuring graduates meet employer needs today and tomorrow. Paul and George will also outline fundraising progress, corporate partnerships, and leadership for the Center, including the recruitment of the former State of Connecticut chief manufacturing officer to oversee its development.
