People First: Driving Sustainable Change in Higher Education

Nick Piscitello - Tufts University
Kerry Collari - Tufts University

Higher education institutions are navigating complex and evolving landscapes—from the impending student demographic cliff, evolving political and federal regulatory challenges, and operational and financial pressures. Successfully managing and implementing change requires more than top-down directives; it calls for a strategic, human centered approach to change – one that is grounded in data, built on cross-functional collaboration, and shaped by inclusive engagement.

This session will equip higher education leaders with a practical framework for leading meaningful change. We will explore how to harness institutional data to inform decision-making, cultivate trust through open communication, create inclusive environments that support stakeholders, and tell compelling stories that connect people to purpose. By prioritizing the people side of change—listening actively, engaging broadly, and collaborating deeply—leaders can build momentum and resilience across their campuses.

Drawing on real-world examples and experiences beyond just higher education, this session will invite open dialogue on current challenges and practical insights into how institutions can drive sustainable improvements while engaging diverse voices across campus. Attendees will learn how to align data with strategy, develop buy-in through authentic communication, and ensure that changes reflect the values and priorities of their entire campus community. Using interactive exercises, we will provide a modeling and review of case studies to demonstrate the tools and processes for effectively engaging key stakeholders, ensuring buy-in and reducing resistance to change.
